Enterprise platform comparison
Snowflake vs Databricks: start with the workload.
Choose Snowflake or Databricks by testing the same data workload, governance controls, integration effort and three-year cost. Neither platform is universally better for enterprise AI.
Who should shortlist each?

Snowflake
start here when the decision centres on a managed SQL analytics estate and the team's existing operating model.

Databricks
start here when engineering and ML workflows are central to the evaluation.

Compare capabilities without creating false divides
| Decision | Snowflake | Databricks |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | Managed cloud platform with separate storage, compute and cloud services. Its documentation excludes local or private-cloud installation. | The verified AWS documentation describes a data and AI platform integrated with cloud storage and security in the customer's cloud account. |
| Workload starting point | SQL analytics, data engineering and Snowpark code are documented capabilities. | SQL analytics, Spark-based data engineering, notebooks and MLflow are documented capabilities. |
| Governance review | Test the required access controls and catalog workflows against the buyer's policies. | Test Unity Catalog permissions and cloud responsibilities against the same policies. |
Both cover overlapping workloads. These are evaluation priorities, not exclusive feature boundaries. Sources:
Three tests. One defensible decision.
Record failed runs, human intervention and costs, not just the fastest demonstration.
01 / Data
Can it recover?
Data: ingest, transform and recover the same representative dataset.
Request POC for this use case02 / Analytics
Can it meet demand?
Analytics: test the same queries, concurrent demand and freshness targets.
Request POC for this use case03 / AI
Can you trust the result?
AI: evaluate one defined task with held-out cases and access-boundary checks.

Is the constraint slow reporting, unreliable pipelines or an AI workflow that cannot meet its quality target? Define the result before choosing a platform.
Business value: a defensible investment decision based on operating evidence.
What should the POC prove?
The chosen workload meets agreed quality, access, reliability and cost limits under representative demand.
Scope a data platform POC. Start discovery with QualifiedPOC. No vendor commitment is implied.
Price the migration and three years of operation
Request workload-specific quotes. Include compute, storage, data movement, support, non-production environments, integration, retraining and operating effort.
Test migration with one pipeline, dashboard and permission model. Reconcile outputs, rehearse cutover and define rollback before moving critical workloads.
Decision gate: accept a platform only when measured POC results and the 36-month cost model support the business case. No saving is assumed here.
Evidence & practical questions
Is Snowflake only a warehouse and Databricks only an AI platform?
No. The current primary documentation shows overlapping analytics, engineering and AI capabilities. Compare the specific workflow and operating model.
Which is cheaper?
A general winner is not defensible without workload, cloud, commercial and operating assumptions. Compare cost per accepted outcome and total three-year cost.
Should we run both?
Only when separate workloads justify duplicated governance, integration and operating responsibilities. Compare against a single-platform baseline.
Are all features available in every deployment?
Do not assume that. Confirm cloud, region, edition, entitlement and release status for every feature in the proposed POC. The Databricks source checked here is AWS-specific.
Source evidence: Snowflake architecture page had no publication date recorded in this review. Databricks introduction displayed last updated 29 October 2026. Source checks are dated 2 November. No pricing rates, guaranteed performance, vendor endorsement or measured lead impact are claimed.
